Rest In Peace: Alexei "Alex" Cherepanov

Alex Cherepanov, the 17th overall draft pick in the 2007 entry draft, collapsed and died on the bench in an Avangard Omsk KHL game today. Alex's heart gave out while sitting on the bench after a shift (previously believed to have been after colliding with a teammate - Jaromir Jagr - since corrected) and, while revived multiple times (some sources say twice, others up to five times), it would not continue beating. In 2005, Detroit's Jiri Fischer's heart gave out on the bench and that is what the loss of Alex is being compared to. If there had been a defibrillator on the bench, Alex could still be here. This is a terrible loss to the International Hockey community and my heart goes out to everyone who knew Alex. I remember watching the draft and saying the Rangers had a star in him, and now this star will shine in heaven.

Rest in peace, Alex.
